Many of us who hunt feel satisfaction of the experience to a high degree. We don’t even have to kill game for this satisfaction to arise. Just being out in a sort of wild place, seeking to harvest a game animal is basic to that satisfaction. The ethical hunting methods we use add to the excitement when we do actually harvest a game animal.

Many hunters enjoy the experience more when in the company of friends. Other folks like to imagine themselves as an early explorer who likes to travel the wild places alone. Ancient instincts arise as a person stalks game and attempts to take an animal for a meal.

As we go hunting in some of our favorite places, we will sometimes encounter a special hunter from time to time. The word “special” may some day not be used when encountering a woman out hunting. Women are starting to be seen at shooting ranges and out hunting much more frequently these days.

There are three main reasons why women are seen at the shooting ranges more frequently. One is that women are taking on the responsibility for their own personal protection and the protection of their families. Women are learning to shoot rifles, pistols and shotguns with defense of family in mind. Some of these women are preparing to take a class in Concealed Carry and want to be able to qualify for the shooting portion of that class.

The second reason we see women shooting more is to prepare for hunting seasons upcoming. We have noticed that many women started hunting because their husbands urged them to join them on the hunt. Their husbands were their mentors. The same goes for many of the women we see at the range. The third reason women shoot is that many women think that shooting is just plain fun, even if we aren’t interested in hunting or self defense.

But the “Girls”, as so many female hunters call themselves, love to hunt with other women who like to shoot and go hunting. Rarely do we see a lone woman hunter. Two is the usual number we see in the field, but sometimes groups of four to six shoot and hunt together. O.K, we have seen a couple of single female hunters over the years, but they are fairly rare. In any case, women seem to really enjoy being in company of hunting companions, no matter if male or female.

Put a group of “Girls” into a blind with goose decoys spread around and plenty of geese looking for friends, and you just know that there will be some fun and good laughs. Sure, they are serious when actually hunting, but the laughter and ribbing are mixed in with the shooting at game. And, quite often, the geese are missed by the shooters and that can bring up a lot of good laughs and teasing. As we’ve said before, it’s the “being there” that means the most. Killing of game is a nice bonus, but companionship and fun are what it is all about.

As long-time readers know, I have a Mountain Man friend who lives in Rapid City. His wife, Laurie, works for South Dakota Game Fish and Parks. She and some friends traveled east to the Pierre area late last fall to hunt the Canada geese that hang out in the Missouri river unless it freezes over in winter.

These Girl Friends had practiced with their shotguns and had become somewhat proficient with their guns and marksmanship. They were ready to take on the large Canada goose of the Missouri River. They rented a blind and guide for the day and found that the geese would come in occasionally to join their decoys. Good calling helps with that.

Several of the “Girls” got a Canada goose, the first for most of them. They seemed to be pretty pleased with their bird. These “Girls” also do trout fishing in the Black Hills so are pretty good at wilderness travel and outdoor enjoyment.

By looking at the photos of the “Girls” with this column, you can see the look of excitement and satisfaction in having harvested a bird of such size.

We hope more women will start to become interested in shooting, hunting, and in learning about personal protection with firearms. Girls just gotta have fun.
